Horror Game Sound Design: Why Silence Scares More Than Sound
Most game developers' first instinct for horror audio is to find the most dissonant, atonal, aggressive music they can and layer it under everything. The result is music that's unpleasant — but not scary. The player puts on headphones, hears constant noise, and learns to tune it out.
The best horror game scores do the opposite: they start with near-silence and earn every moment of intensity.
The paradox of horror music
Fear is a physiological response to uncertainty. The brain is constantly making predictions about what's about to happen; fear is what happens when the prediction system breaks down. Music that is constantly intense doesn't create uncertainty — it creates a steady state. The player's nervous system habituates to it within minutes.
Music that varies — that alternates between silence and sound, safety and danger — exploits the prediction system directly. The question "is it safe right now?" is answered by the music. When the music removes itself from that role (goes silent), the question goes unanswered, and the brain stays in a low-grade alert state.
This is why Amnesia: The Dark Descent is more frightening than most horror games with bigger budgets: it doesn't give you music to cling to.
Four principles of effective horror audio
1. Start below silence
Most DAWs default to treating "no sound" as the floor. Horror audio starts below that floor — with sounds that are barely audible: a low-frequency drone at -30 dB, a barely-there high-pitched tonal shimmer, a near-inaudible reversed breath.
These sub-threshold sounds aren't perceived consciously, but they're perceived physically: the body registers low-frequency vibration before the ear resolves it as musical pitch. This is why large sub-bass drones (20–60 Hz) are such a staple of horror film scores. Your speakers may not even reproduce them fully, but their presence colors everything else.
How to implement this in Mowjera: Set your safe-zone state's atmosphere track to near-silence (very low volume, pad voicing), and set the state's overall intensity to 0.1. The music is technically playing — it just registers as the absence of music.
2. Use contrast, not consistency
A horror score that is always at maximum tension is a horror score that has given up its most powerful tool: the drop. The moment when music cuts out entirely — or cuts to a specific stinger — is the moment of maximum physiological response.
This is why adaptive music is particularly effective in horror games. A safe-zone state that plays near-silence, followed by an alert state that adds a dissonant string cluster, followed by a pursuit state that triggers a full orchestral panic, creates three distinct physiological moments:
- Recognition: "the music changed — something is happening"
- Response: sustained fight-or-flight during the intense state
- Release: when the intense state ends and near-silence returns
The third moment — the return to silence — is frequently more disturbing than the onset of the intense state. The player is still in an aroused state, but the threat indicator has gone away. Is it over? Is something worse about to happen?
3. Control the resolution
Tonal music resolves tension through harmonic movement — a dominant chord resolving to tonic. Horror music earns its power by denying that resolution, or by resolving to something unexpected.
A score that builds to a strong, dissonant cluster and then dissolves to... a pure, quiet major chord is more unsettling than one that dissolves to silence. The body is waiting for the scare to come; a moment of pure consonance after dissonance is cognitively confusing.
This is called a "false resolution" — use it sparingly, because its power depends on surprise.
4. Use the stinger correctly
A stinger in game audio is a short, one-shot sound event that fires at a specific moment (a door opening, an enemy appearing). Horror games often misuse stingers by playing them too loud, too often, and too predictably.
Stingers should be: - Rare — no more than one every 60–90 seconds of play, ideally less - Loud relative to the ambience — if your ambient layer is at -20 dB, your stinger at -6 dB is 14 dB louder, which is a significant jump - Short — 0.5–2 seconds. Longer stingers start to feel like musical cues rather than punctuation - Followed by silence or a drop — the stinger is the shock; the silence after it is the creep

Practical music selection for horror games
When browsing or composing horror music for a game, look for:
Slow BPM or no BPM: Scores with no clear pulse or a very slow one (< 70 BPM) create uncertainty. Scores with a clear, driving beat feel like an action game, not a horror game.
Minimal melodic content in the safe state: If the safe state has a recognizable melody, the player will hum along to it. Humming is the opposite of being scared. Safe-state horror music should be textural, not melodic.
Dynamic range: A score where the safe state is at -20 dB and the combat state is at -6 dB has 14 dB of dynamic headroom to use for horror effect. A score that's at -10 dB throughout doesn't have room to be scary.
Dissonance placed strategically: Every note in a horror score should be interrogated: does this note create uncertainty, or does it resolve it? A minor 2nd interval (e.g., C and C#) creates maximum dissonance. A perfect 5th (C and G) is surprisingly stable even in a minor key context. Horror scores should lean on 2nds, tritones, and major 7th intervals.
The silence itself is the instrument
The strongest horror experiences in games — Amnesia, Soma, Hellblade (in its quieter moments) — use silence not as the absence of something but as an active element. Silence says: "I don't know what's coming, and neither do you."
Every sound in a horror score should fight to earn its place. If it doesn't add uncertainty or contrast, it probably shouldn't be there.
